Author:

Abstract
Sheppard Frere was Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at Oxford from 1967 to his retirement in 1983, but most of his early career as a university teacher and scholar was spent at the Institute, where he was the first full-time Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces. Here he recalls his years
at the Institute, from 1955 to 1966, first at St John’s Lodge and later in Gordon Square.
